Stone: Ravenna Cemetery, Ravenna Michigan
Marion Henry Higgins 1844-1900

Marion Henry Higgins was born August 2, 1844 in Ohio to parents Henry Higgins & Lucinda Miller. He lived in Mayfield Township, Cuyohoga County Ohio with his parents and siblings Murray, Ervin, Solomon, Miranda, Salinda, Rosina and Ella per 1860 census.
He married Chloe E. Dean daughter of Arnold Dean & Lucy Harger in Ohio. As the census was taken on August 14th 1870, Marion and Chloe were living in Mayfield township, Cuyohoga County Ohio with their 1 year old son Charles. Marion’s real estate value was $3000 and personal estate value $100.
Marion moved his family to Ravenna sometime between 1870-1873. Marion & Chloe’s daughter Mattie A. was born in Ravenna on January 16, 1874. She died on September 19, 1875 and is buried in the Ravenna Cemetery. Son Henry L. was born in Ravenna 1877 and died in 1882 and is buried in the Ravenna Cemetery. A Lewis Higgins is listed in a birth register as Marion & Chloe’s son b April 23, 1878 and he is not found at any other time, perhaps this is Henry as no Lewis is listed in the Ravenna Cemetery records, or on a census. If Henry and Lewis are one and the same, the birth years from stone to record conflict.
The 1880 Census records finds Marion listed with...Mlaw Chloe, Charles age 11 b. Ohio, Henry age 2 b. Michigan. Marion is listed as a farmer.
In 1895 Marion became the proprietor of the Ravenna House, the towns only hotel which was built around 1877 on Main Street. Marion’s son Charles was married to Mamie Price daughter of Charles Price & Jane Scott on September 2, 1895, Charles was a barber and Mamie was a dressmaker.
Marion was injured during the fire that started late in the evening April 4, 1900 and continued into the morning hours of April 5th. He died as a result of those injuries on April 5, 1900, leaving behind wife Chloe and son Charles and 3 brothers in Ohio, 4 sisters in Ohio and Minnesota. His funeral was held on Sunday, April 8 1900 at the home of Jacob DeHart, Marion is buried in the Ravenna Cemetery.
