Joseph Scholes October 26, 1825 - July 13, 1884

Jospeph Scholes was born in England in 1825. Joseph was a Civil War Veteran. He was a farmer with 80 acres in the NE quarter of section 8 in Ravenna twp, and per the 1877 map settled there in 1865 on Moorland Road just south of Heights Ravenna Road, know long ago as Muskegon Street.

On the 1860, June 23rd census for the ‘Town of Ravenna’ is Joseph Scoles with his wife Maria and son George, his neighbors are the Young, Gregory and McGehan families. Joseph a farmer age 34 and his wife Maria age 25 were both born in England. Joseph has a real estate value of $600 and personal estate value of $200. George age 2, was born in New York.

In 1870, on June the 14th on the Ravenna census the Scholes family is listed. Joseph Seales a farmer age 46, his wife Maria age 36 and children George W. age 12, Sarah age 6 b Michigan, and James A. age 1 b Michigan. The real estate value is $2000 and personal estate is $350. His neighbors were the families of Wood and Gregory.

In 1880 Joseph a farmer age 55 is listed in Ravenna with his family Maria 46 keeping house, George 22 a farm laborer, Sarah 16 and Arthur 11. There is a boarder living in the house, William Nutting a carpenter age 20 born in New Hampshire.

Joseph died July 13, 1884 and is buried in the Ravenna Cemetery.

Never underestimate the power of a misspelled surname.
